Prof. Walter Kealin Envoy of the Chair of the Platform on Disaster Displacement Prof. Kealin will highlight on the relevance of international cooperation and partnerships in addressing climate change and natural disasters. Agenda for Sustainable Development, specifically the SDG 10.7 on safe orderly and regular migration, a comprehensive approach is needed to optimize the overall benefits of migration, while addressing risks and challenges for individuals and communities in countries of origin, transit and destination. Regional organizations can play an instrumental role by fostering appropriate cooperation frameworks, innovative partnerships and inclusive debate in addressing the consistent impacts of poverty, unemployment, climate change and disasters, among others. Regional organizations can also promote ownership and reinforce sharedresponsibility by supporting the involvement of all the relevant stakeholders.For this reason, the Intergovernmental Authority on Development () will be organizing asa precursor to the Conference on the Global Compact for Migration (GCM), a side event tobring together national, regional and global state and non-state actors addressing most ofthese structural factors and to showcase good practices, policy implications, existing anddesired partnerships to support the implementation of the GCM.
